Supplying precast concrete garages across Scotland, we see many homeowners choose to repurpose their garages. A key part of any conversion is insulation.
What follows is a simple outline of the floor insulation process. There are many step-by-step guides available online if you want extra detail, but in any case if you’re in any doubt about your skills, we’d strongly suggest bringing in a professional. With decades of experience providing and installing precast concrete garages, we’ve found that most customers prefer to leave floor insulation to the experts. That said, here’s what’s typically involved.
Start by emptying the garage and giving the floor a thorough clean so that it’s free from dust and debris. A damp-proof membrane should then be laid directly onto the floor, with the edges turned up the wall. Don’t worry about trimming it neatly yet – this can be done later once the flooring is finished.
Next, measure out and cut rigid foam insulation boards so that they fit neatly into the space. A straightedge and hand saw will help keep the edges accurate. Allow for a slim expansion gap around the perimeter, and fit a narrow strip of insulation around the edges up to the level of your finished floor to stop cold bridging. On top of this layer you can either place timber floor panels or pour a screed of roughly 50mm thickness.
Once the insulation has been completed, you’ll be ready to finish the floor with your chosen covering, whether that’s vinyl, carpet or rubber matting. For the best results, you might also consider adding insulation to the garage door and walls to keep the space warm and energy-efficient. Done properly, floor insulation not only improves comfort but also makes the conversion of a precast concrete garage seem more complete.
We at Precast Garages Scotland are trusted specialists in sectional concrete garages. We lay a new concrete base where required, but often we can build on an existing one, subject to a free, no-obligation survey. And, importantly, if you need your new garage to be insulated, we’ll be happy to offer that service too!
