Who invented precast sectional concrete garages?

Precast Garages Scotland

Precast Garages Scotland offers a range of prefabricated sectional concrete garages across southern Scotland, from Glasgow to Edinburgh and beyond.

But where did it all begin?
Well, you can’t discuss the origins of precast sectional concrete garages without mentioning John Alexander Brodie (1858-1934), an influential English civil engineer with Scottish ancestors. Brodie’s innovative contributions to civil engineering and urban planning left a lasting legacy, especially in Liverpool. Notably, he was one of the engineers behind the Mersey Tunnel beneath the River Mersey and is also famous for inventing the goal netting used in soccer matches since 1891. Before his invention, the absence of nets often led to disputes over whether a goal had been scored.

Brodie was born in Bridgnorth on June 1, 1858. His father, James Brodie, hailed from Kettins, Scotland. In 1875, Brodie began his engineering journey with an apprenticeship at the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board under Chief Engineer George Fosbery Lyster. His academic prowess earned him scholarships in 1879 to study mathematics at Owen’s College in Manchester. Following his graduation, he undertook a three-year traineeship at the office of Sir Joseph Whitworth.

Brodie could never have known that his innovative mind would eventually lead to the invention of prefabricated concrete garages. Scotland will forever be in his debt!

That’s right, Brodie’s foresight extended to prefabricated building technology. He championed the use of precast reinforced concrete slabs to construct houses quickly and affordably. He showcased this method at the Cheap Cottages Exhibition in Letchworth Garden City, garnering international attention. His work significantly influenced Grosvenor Atterbury, who adopted a similar technique for the houses at Forest Hills Gardens.

Brodie’s innovations, particularly in the area of precast concrete, laid the groundwork for modern sectional concrete garages, revolutionising construction with methods that remain relevant today.
